GreenerBuilder 2018 to Focus on Sustainability in Pacific Region

Urban environmentalist Vien Truong will headline the August 1 regional U.S. Green Building Council’s GreenerBuilder 2018 Conference.

Truong is the CEO Dream Corps, which is leading a movement called Green For All that puts “communities of color at the forefront of the climate movement and equality at the center of environmental solutions,” according to information from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The event will take place at the University of California, San Francisco, Mission Bay Conference Center.

The GreenerBuilder conference will focus, specifically, on sustainability in the Pacific region. “We are thrilled to welcome Vien Truong to the GreenerBuilder stage as she brings a powerful voice in addressing the equity issues facing our movement,” said Kimberly Lewis, senior vice president of market transformation and development for North America at USGBC.

“Communities of every size and socioeconomic make up are grappling with how best to combat climate change and develop responsibly. Vien offers a fresh perspective on these challenging issues--she brings equality to the fore and champions a future that is sustainable in every sense.”

Truong was recognized with the White House Champion of Change for Environmental Equity award, among other accolades, and is a strong voice in the architectural industry, according to information from the USGBC. As an advocate of an “equitable green economy,” she has had a hand in developing energy, economic, transportation and environmental policies at every level of government.

Green For All, the initiative she is spearheading, is aimed at using the green economy to create wealth for those in poverty. “Our goal is to make sure people of color and working families have a place and a voice in the climate movement that our neighborhoods are strong, resilient, and healthy," according to promotional materials from the organization. "That as the clean energy economy grows, it brings jobs and opportunity to our communities.”

“Neighborhood activists. National organizations. Hip Hop Artists. Clergy. Elected officials. Business leaders and civil rights advocates. Green For All works with the best and brightest in America to fight for a healthy environment and strong communities.”

It’s three core tenants are “communicating breakthrough ideas and frameworks, catalyzing new efforts and strategic initiatives,” and “connecting across cultures and discipline to build a stronger, more integrated, and more collaborative movement.”

The GreenerBuilder conference brings together individuals in the Pacific region to flesh out green technology and designs. It covers engineer, construction, architecture, and LEED management, according to information from the USGBC. “Prevalent themes at this year’s conference tackle energy and decarbonization, resilience, health and wellness, equity, the circular economy and waste,” according to information provided by the sponsors.

Some of the seminars planned for the event include The San Francisco Waterfront–Meeting the Challenges for the Next 100 Years, Future Proof Your Building with Circular Design, and All Buildings In: Focusing on Meaningful Impacts and Outcomes.
