Why Don’t Young Americans Want to Work in Construction?

Tackling the labor shortage problem in construction is an ongoing quest, with answers as elusive, it seems, as the Holy Grail.

In a feature from Builder Online, a combination of sources is culled together to illustrate various angles from which the problem should be viewed and solutions sought. Statistical data shows historically high job opening rates across sectors, but low rates of influx into skilled labor.

The answer is not that young workers don’t want to labor in intense conditions, such as heat or freezing rain. Such a conclusion is more speculation than fact, and doesn’t offer solutions. Rather, employers need to understand potential millennial age job candidates in terms of what matters to them about the work they do: stability of work and income is at the top of the list.
