Would the Pixar Model of Film Production Work for Construction?

The construction industry shares a lot in common with the Hollywood film industry in the use of a planned strategic model for delivering a product to the customer---be it a blockbuster film or an architectural wonder. So reports the Engineering News-Record.

Both construction and film production begin with a vision, which is translated into a blueprint for creating (building) a final product. Crew roles and responsibilities, technology, logistics, metrics and environmental considerations have to be made by both executive producers and construction managers.

But Pixar recently integrated a new production model that the construction industry can learn from. Under the leadership of tech visionary Steve Jobs, Pixar brought all facets of production under one roof. Creative teams that develop stories, animation and CGI teams, stage crews and marketing teams collaborate from within the same workspace.

Could bringing every aspect of construction under one room—vetting and direct-hiring crews and managers, design and engineering, and building lifecycle management—be the next generation of construction project management?
