Holistic Design: From Bathroom to Retreat Room

Design has the power to turn ordinary spaces into extraordinary escapes. Nowhere in a home is this more true than for the bathroom.

With more customers being attentive to holistic living, the well being of every family member can benefit from the art of holistic design for the bathroom. Keeping in mind the interconnectedness of a holistic approach, it’s easy to transform a bland bathroom into an oasis for relaxation at home.

Consider the power of color on mood as well as how it effects perception of size of a space. Psychologists have studied the effect of color on mood, productivity, and stress levels in a variety of settings from hospitals, to offices, to bedrooms. Light colors, such as yellow, make rooms appear larger and brighter. Darker colors create a closed-in feeling. Colors with warm hues, such as orange can invigorate a space and the people working in it.

Greens, blues and purples and associated cool colors can create a sense of calm and focus. Many professional spas use blues, browns, and deep reds to inspire a sense of calm.

The gentle sound and caressing feel of water will invoke relaxation more so than a noisy, hard jet stream from the shower head. An advanced showering system with pre-programmed “spa experiences” provides a range of spray intensities to suit the preferences of all family members.

Many systems allow for temperature control from two different spray valves. Simultaneously, the “weekend warrior” can soothe sore muscles with a cold-water jet targeted at the lower back while keeping the rest of the body warm from the overhead raindrop showerhead.

Go one step further… today, the indulgence of a steam shower no longer requires a trip to the spa, either. Now, you can give your residential customers the luxury of a steam shower in just about any size bathroom.

Complete your customer’s holistic bathroom retreat by adding a sound system. From nature sounds to relaxing tunes, music is therapy for the soul—well, at least for health and wellness. Music is linked to mood, memory, and relief of anxiety/stress. Bathroom sound systems can be pre-programmed and a surround sound experience can be integrated into bathroom design for an immersive experience. Wireless controls in the shower area make it easy to change what’s playing.

There’s nothing more shocking to the system, after a hot steam shower, than your client stepping onto a cold floor. Consider radiant floor heating to maintain the spa atmosphere. It’s not only ideal for new construction, it can also be retrofitted for some older homes, too.

These are just a few of the major trends for transforming the family bath into an oasis from work, school, and sports. Don’t forget the subtle details such as cabinet style and color, fixtures, faucets, and wall décor. The more you can guide your customer on the vision for their “spa retreat at home,” the happie –and more relaxed—they will be.
